3️⃣ How to Configure Cyber Missions?

In this article you will find out how to activate Cyber Missions.

☝️ To switch to Cyber Missions, use the "Meet the Cyber Mission" card in the sidebar (see ❶). If it doesn't appear, our team handles the migration: contact us via the chat.

ℹ️ What is the Cyber Mission configuration for?

The configuration lets you:

  • launch the monthly mission cycle;

  • choose what missions contain (Awareness, Sonar, Breaches);

  • choose where missions are delivered (instant messaging or employee portal);

  • set up reminders to employees and alerts to managers;

  • enable or disable competition between squads and social nudges;

  • define the compliance framework, if needed.

☑️ Prerequisites

  • Have admin rights on your Riot workspace.

  • Have a subscription that includes the Awareness module.

❶ Switch to Cyber Missions

If your workspace can be migrated, a "Meet the Cyber Mission" card appears in the Admin platform sidebar. It opens a 6-step wizard that explains what changes: the continuity of your programme, Karma becoming Aura, the new Cyber Posture and squads.

  • At the squads step, you can automatically split your employees into squads. This option is on by default, and you can change it later in the settings.

  • By clicking "Complete migration", you enable Cyber Missions and land on your mission programme, with sending paused: nothing is sent to your employees until you are ready.

👍 Good to know: if your workspace is managed by an organization, the card doesn't appear: our team handles the migration. Contact us via the chat.

❷ Enable Cyber Missions

Paramètres > Cyber Mission : activation et contenu des missions

  1. Open your Admin platform: hub.tryriot.com

  2. Go to Settings → Cyber Mission.

  3. Enable Cyber Missions with the toggle at the top of the page: the status changes to Live.

Once enabled, a new mission is generated on the 1st of each month.

❸ Choose what missions contain

The Mission content section shows a preview of what an employee sees when they open their monthly mission. This preview is for illustration only: tasks vary by employee and by month.

Below it, each module that feeds missions has its own Edit button, which opens its settings:

  • Awareness: the monthly evaluation (a 5-question quiz) and assigned courses;

  • Sonar: security reviews linked to your active rules;

  • Breaches: data breach alerts related to the employee's accounts.

❹ Choose where missions are delivered

Mission delivery

The Mission delivery section shows where missions are delivered. Click Edit to change it.

  • With Instant messaging, courses and quizzes are sent to the employee's messaging app. The rest of the mission goes through the employee portal, app.tryriot.com.

  • Employees who don't use a supported messaging app receive their missions through the portal. The page shows how many employees are affected.

If you use a channel other than email, check that it is enabled in Settings → Notifications.

❺ Set up notifications

Notifications des Cyber Missions

The Notifications section groups the messages sent through each employee's preferred channel, in their language, according to when they go out.

👉 Always sent

  • Mission introduction, when a new employee joins: Albert introduces himself and invites the employee to complete their first mission. You choose who the message is sent on behalf of (Sent on behalf of) and can add a link to your resources, such as your security policy.

  • New mission available, when each mission is launched.

👉 14 days before the deadline

  • Follow-up reminder: reminds employees who haven't completed their mission.

  • Calendar slot: books a 15-minute slot with employees who haven't completed their mission. Click Connect to set it up.

  • Manager escalation: notifies managers about team members who haven't completed their mission. You choose who the message is sent on behalf of.

👉 3 days before the deadline

  • Last reminder: final reminder to employees who haven't completed their mission.

  • Manager escalation: second alert to managers.

Reminders and manager alerts are enabled or disabled one by one. The Preview link shows each message as its recipient receives it.

👍 Good to know: if your internal policy rules out reminding your employees, disable Follow-up reminder, Last reminder and social nudges (section ❻). The introduction message and the announcement of each new mission are still sent: they are what let the employee know their mission is available.

Channel details are described in Set Up and Modify the Notification Channel.

❻ Enable competition between squads and social nudges

Internal competition et Social nudges

Internal competition splits your employees into squads that compete for the top spot each month. If you disable it, squads disappear from the employee portal. See 6️⃣ How are squads composed?

Social nudges remind employees who haven't completed their mission, through their squad. This setting is enabled independently of the other notifications. It includes:

  • Squad leader nudge: the squad leader can nudge an employee from the squad view;

  • Squad progress: when the employee's squad reaches 80% mission completion;

  • Squad member progress: when the first member of the squad completes the mission;

  • Company progress: when the workspace reaches 75% mission completion;

  • Rival squad progress: when another squad reaches 80% mission completion.

⚠️ Important: if you want to limit how often your employees are contacted, social nudges are the first setting to look at. You can turn them off without touching the end-of-mission reminders.

The option that hid the leaderboard is no longer in the settings. If you want to hide it, contact us via the chat.

❼ The impact of your Awareness programme configuration

Missions are based on how your Awareness programme is organised, in particular:

  • the audiences of each course;

  • the catalogue courses added to your programme.

The monthly mission is generated automatically with the courses each employee needs to take, based on their progress.

❽ Enable a compliance framework (optional)

If your organization has obligations (for example, certain awareness topics to complete first for a certification):

  • you can set a strict deadline from the Awareness Settings by enabling Compliance Mode;

  • the first mission of each year is then dedicated to compliance: all its courses become priorities and trigger reminders and admin alerts when needed;

  • reminder messages put more emphasis on the importance of completing this first mission.

❾ Check what employees see

After setting things up, run a test with one user:

  • receipt of the new mission notification;

  • access to the mission in the portal, app.tryriot.com;

  • tasks displayed (courses, Sonar, breaches depending on your use case). The evaluation only appears from the second mission onwards;

  • squads visible, if internal competition is enabled.

🛠️ Quick troubleshooting

  • "I'm not receiving notifications": check the enabled channel (Slack, Teams, email) and the employee's preferences. If only reminders are missing, check that Follow-up reminder and Last reminder are enabled (section ❺).

  • "My employee receives too many messages": disable social nudges first (section ❻).

  • "Not all employees have the same mission": this is normal (different audiences and progress).

  • "Some tasks aren't in Slack or Teams": some actions require going through the employee portal, app.tryriot.com.

Key takeaways

  • Everything is set up in Settings → Cyber Mission: activation, content, delivery channel, notifications and competition.

  • The introduction and the announcement of each mission are always sent. Reminders (14 days and then 3 days before the deadline) and manager alerts are set up one by one.

  • Social nudges are turned off separately: they are the first lever to reduce how often employees are contacted.

  • The leaderboard can no longer be hidden from the settings: contact us via the chat.
