How to install Albert on Google Chat?

Installing Albert on Google Chat lets your employees receive their courses and notifications in Google Chat. The procedure is longer than for the other channels, because it goes through the Google Admin console.

Installing Albert on Google Chat lets your employees receive their courses and notifications in Google Chat. The procedure is longer than for the other channels, because it goes through the Google Admin console.

💡 Prerequisite: the administrator carrying out the installation must have the right to install Albert on your Google Workspace, or already see the Albert conversation in their own Google Chat.

1️⃣ Understanding the three stages of the installation

To send a message to an employee on Google Chat, Riot needs the ID of the conversation between Albert and that employee. Hence three stages:

  1. You install Albert from the Marketplace for all the employees concerned.

  2. An administrator who already sees Albert confirms the installation from Riot.

  3. At each synchronisation, Riot asks Google for the conversation ID of employees not yet linked to Google Chat.

⚠️ Important: an employee can only be marked as reachable on Google Chat after the Albert conversation has actually appeared in their Google Chat. This is the key to understanding most of the situations described below.

2️⃣ The steps

👉 Step 1: In your Riot platform, go to Settings > Notifications, select Slack, Teams, Google Chat, then click Connect.

👉 Step 2: Follow the steps in the guided window. If Google synchronisation is not yet active, set it up first — see Sync my employees.

👉 Step 3: Click Open Google Workspace Marketplace.

👉 Step 4: Check that you are signed in with the right administrator account, then choose Admin install and confirm.

👉 Step 5: Choose the scope: everyone, or specific groups and organizational units.

👉 Step 6: Wait for the Albert conversation to appear in the Google Chat of the administrator who will confirm.

👉 Step 7: Go back to your Riot platform and click Confirm install.

3️⃣ The distinction not to miss: allowing is not installing

⚠️ Important: adding Albert to the allowed apps list does not install it. It only lets your employees install it themselves. The classic outcome: only the employees who went looking for Albert and added it on their own initiative show up on Google Chat, and none of the others.

For the installation to be effective for everyone, Albert must appear in the apps installed for the domain, on the target groups or organizational units — not just in the allowed apps list.

4️⃣ If you block unconfigured third-party apps

In Google Workspace, the allowed apps list only has an effect if a policy enforces it. The setting is in the Google Admin console, under Security > Access and data control > API controls, in the entry about unconfigured third-party apps.

  • If you allow all third-party apps: nothing to configure, the allow list is ignored.

  • If you block unconfigured apps: you must add Albert to the allow list, in addition to installing it.

5️⃣ Albert doesn't appear in Google Chat

Four causes, in order of frequency.

👉 Propagation delay

On a Google Workspace with more than 1,000 accounts, actions can take several hours — sometimes a day or two — to propagate on Google's side. This is the most common case, and there is nothing to fix: you have to wait.

👉 The type of group used

Google cannot install an app from a mailing list. Make sure you have designated security groups.

👉 Nested groups

Avoid them. With nested groups, Google takes far longer to install apps — delays of several weeks have been observed.

👉 Inheritance between organizational units

If you have designated organizational units, check that they don't inherit the settings of a parent unit where Albert isn't allowed. The information is shown under the app's distribution, with two possible values: inherited or overridden.

👍 Going further: the Google admin logs record every app installation. Check that the app is indeed marked as activated: if it appears as added but inactive, review the permissions granted and the activation scope, then allow time for propagation.

👉 If notifications still don't reach your employees once Albert is installed, see Albert notifications aren't arriving (Slack, Google Chat, Teams).

6️⃣ The "Albert is not installed" error when confirming

This error almost always means that two different accounts were used: one to install Albert on Google Workspace, the other to confirm the installation in Riot. Since Albert is not installed on the Riot administrator account, the confirmation fails.

Two options: install Albert on the account used as the Riot administrator, or wait for the Albert conversation to appear there.

Key takeaways

  • Three stages: Marketplace, confirmation in Riot, then conversation retrieval at each synchronisation.

  • Allowing Albert is not installing it — this is the most common confusion.

  • Above 1,000 accounts, expect several hours of propagation.

  • Use security groups, not mailing lists, and avoid nested groups.

  • Install and confirm with the same account.
