Remix lets you create an editable copy of an existing Riot course. That copy becomes a custom course of your own, which you adapt to your context: your tools, your internal rules, your vocabulary.
💡 Prerequisite: editing a remixed course is open to everyone. Sharing it or adding it to your programme, however, requires an Awareness Studio subscription.
1️⃣ What a remixed course is
A remixed course is a custom Studio course. It belongs to the workspace where it was created, which leaves you free to change its content however you like.
In practice, you are not modifying the original Riot course: you are creating your own version of it. The Riot course remains available as-is in the catalogue.
2️⃣ Which courses can be remixed
A large part of the catalogue can be remixed — chapter by chapter for multi-year courses. The list grows regularly; you can see it directly in Studio when creating a remix.
Three pieces of content, however, are not courses and cannot be remixed:
phishing remediation;
data breach notifications;
the introduction prelude.
3️⃣ How far to go when rewriting
Technically, you can change or delete any content in a remixed course. But our courses are built to cover a topic in depth, with a sequence of advice and scenarios that build on each other.
Our recommendation is therefore to keep the key content and to watch the consistency between what you add and what was already there. A remix that simply slots your tools and procedures into an existing course is usually more effective than a full rewrite.
👍 Good to know: if you're unsure how far to take your changes, contact us via the chat: we can advise on what is worth keeping.
4️⃣ What your employees receive
👉 For a single-version course
The remixed course is entirely independent of the Riot version. They are two separate courses in your catalogue.
👉 For a multi-year course
If you have remixed a specific chapter and placed it in your programme, your employees receive your version of that chapter, not the original. As long as the remixed chapter stays in the programme, that is the one delivered.
Example: you remix chapter 2 of the Passwords course and place the matching card in year 2. Employees reaching their second year receive your remixed chapter, not the original chapter 2.
5️⃣ Why an original and its remix can't coexist
⚠️ Important: you cannot place a Riot course and its own remix in the same programme year. Your employees would receive the same content twice, barely reworded.
Creating several distinct remixes of the same course and placing them in the same year is perfectly possible, however — and even recommended — as long as they target different audiences with content that doesn't overlap.
Example: from the personal data course, you create an "HR" version focused on personnel files and recruitment, and a "Customer Support" version focused on handling customer information. Both can coexist in the same year, addressed to two distinct audiences.
👍 The right reflex: pair each remix with a group matching its audience. That is what makes the whole exercise worthwhile: one topic, covered with the examples specific to each role.
6️⃣ Creating and delivering your remix
A remix is created from the Awareness module, starting from the course you want to adapt. Once created, it behaves like any other Studio course:
editing the content follows the same rules — see Editing a Studio Course;
adding it to the programme works the same way — see Integrate a Studio course into your course program.
👍 Good to know: if you manage several workspaces within an organization, a remixed course can be shared across all of them. See "Managing awareness across an organization".
Key takeaways
A remix is an editable copy of a Riot course, which becomes a Studio course of your own.
Editing is open to everyone; adding it to the programme requires a Studio subscription.
On a multi-year course, the remixed chapter replaces the original in the programme.
An original and its remix can't coexist in the same year; several remixes targeting different audiences can.
