5️⃣ Set up your Cyber Missions

Prepare your Cyber Missions before launching them: mission content, delivery channel, reminders to employees, alerts to managers and competition between squads.

Cyber Missions are at the heart of Riot: every month, each of your employees receives a short mission that brings together what they have to do (courses, quizzes, security checks). In this step, you prepare your missions. You will only launch them at the end of the journey, once your modules are ready and your employees have been informed.

💡 Prerequisites:

  • Administrator access to Riot, and being signed in to hub.tryriot.com;

  • a plan that includes the Awareness module;

  • having chosen your employees' notification channel (step 4).

⚠️ Important: at the top of the Cyber Mission tab is the button that activates Cyber Missions. Do not click it now. Activation is the last step of the journey: once activated, missions are sent to your employees.

❶ Open the Cyber Missions settings

👉 Step 1: Open the Cyber Mission tab

In the left-hand column of your screen, click Settings. At the top of the page, click the Cyber Mission tab. All the settings in this article are on this page, from top to bottom.

❷ Choose the mission content

Settings > Cyber Mission: mission content

The Mission content section shows a preview of what an employee sees when they open their mission of the month. This preview is for guidance only: tasks vary depending on the employee and the month.

Below it, each module that feeds the missions has its own Edit button, which opens its settings:

  • Awareness: the monthly evaluation (a 5-question quiz) and the courses to take;

  • Sonar: the security checks linked to your active rules;

  • Breaches: alerts about data leaks linked to the employee's accounts.

👍 Good to know: the courses offered in the missions come from your Awareness programme (the courses you add to it and the employees who must take them). You will prepare it at step 8. Each month's mission is then built automatically, based on each person's progress.

❸ Choose where missions are sent

Mission delivery

The Mission delivery section shows where missions are sent. To change it, click Edit.

  • With instant messaging (Slack, Teams or Google Chat), courses and quizzes arrive directly in the employee's messaging app. The rest of the mission is done on the employee portal, app.tryriot.com.

  • Employees who don't use a supported messaging app do their missions on the employee portal. The page tells you how many employees are concerned.

The messaging app must be enabled in Settings > Notifications (step 4) to be available here.

❹ Set reminders and alerts to managers

Cyber Missions notifications

The Notifications section groups together the messages sent to your employees, on their usual channel and in their language. They are sorted by when they are sent. The Preview link shows each message as its recipient will receive it.

👉 Always sent

  • Mission introduction, when a new employee arrives: Albert introduces himself and invites them to do their first mission. Choose who the message is sent on behalf of (Sent on behalf of) and, if you wish, add a link to your resources, your security policy for example.

  • New mission available, when each mission is launched.

👉 14 days before the deadline

  • Follow-up reminder: reminds employees who haven't finished their mission.

  • Calendar slot: books a 15-minute slot in the calendar of employees who haven't finished. Click Connect to enable it.

  • Manager escalation: tells managers which members of their team haven't finished. Choose who the message is sent on behalf of.

👉 3 days before the deadline

  • Last reminder: final reminder to employees who haven't finished.

  • Manager escalation: second alert to managers.

Reminders and alerts to managers are turned on or off one by one.

👍 Good to know: if your internal policy requires you not to send reminders to your employees, turn off both reminders and the social nudges (see ❺). The introduction message and the announcement of each mission are still sent: they are what tell the employee that their mission is available.

❺ Enable competition between squads and social nudges

Competition and social nudges

👉 Competition between squads (Internal competition)

Your employees are split into squads, teams that compete each month for first place. If you turn off the competition, squads disappear from the employee portal. To find out more: 6️⃣ How are squads composed?

👉 Social nudges (Social nudges)

They remind employees who haven't finished their mission, through their squad. They are turned on independently of the other notifications:

  • the squad leader can nudge an employee from their squad view;

  • a message is sent when the employee's squad reaches 80% completion;

  • a message is sent when the first member of the squad finishes their mission;

  • a message is sent when your organisation reaches 75% completion;

  • a message is sent when another squad reaches 80% completion.

💡 Our recommendation: if you want to limit the number of prompts, start with the social nudges. You can turn them off without touching the end-of-mission reminders.

❻ Enable a compliance framework (optional)

Useful if your organisation needs to prove that its employees have completed their training, for example for a certification.

👉 Step 1: Open the Awareness settings

In the left-hand column, click Awareness, then open its settings by clicking the small ⚙️.

👉 Step 2: Turn on compliance mode

Turn on the Compliance mode switch. Your employees will then have to complete their first mission within 30 days: all the courses in this first mission become required and trigger reminders, alerts to managers and alerts to administrators. The Preview link shows you the result.

👍 Good to know: on the same page, the Compliance reporting section lets you send each employee's compliance status to your compliance platform: Drata, Thoropass or Vanta. Click Connect.

🛠️ A problem?

  • The messaging app isn't offered in the delivery options: check that it is enabled in Settings > Notifications (step 4).

Key takeaways

  • Everything is set in Settings > Cyber Mission: content, delivery channel, reminders, alerts to managers and competition.

  • Don't activate Cyber Missions yet: it is the last step of the journey.

  • The introduction and the announcement of each mission are always sent; reminders and alerts to managers are set one by one.

  • To reduce the number of prompts, turn off the social nudges first.
